WiseNut Defunct
Gary noticed that WiseNut, the search engine that has done next to nothing for several years, is now defunct. Owner LookSmart, a long time bit player in search engines and directories now has no Web search engine or directory. Its only two remaining properties now appear to be Furl and FindArticles....
WiseNut: Distributed Crawling by Grub
WiseNut owner LookSmart apparently bought Grub back in January. Grub is a project in "distributed Web crawling" that offers a screen-saver that will then use a computer's spare clock cycles to do some Web crawling. If this can spread widely enough it could certainly help WiseNut's crawling and make WiseNut more up-to-date. Hopefully, people will not find ways to spam the crawling process. And I am not yet seeing any update at WiseNut yet (most of their results still seem to be from Autumn 2002)....
WiseNut Number Gone
I just noticed today that WiseNut no longer displays a number in the upper left corner. Formerly, WiseNut posted " 1,571,413,207 Web pages and counting!" there. Now that they have finally launched a fresher database (as I posted earlier) apparently they are either no longer counting, or more likely, it is a smaller overal database. Strangely enough, the old number is still up on their corporate contact page....
WiseNut Refreshed
At some unknown and unannounced point in the past month, WiseNut finally refreshed its database. For most of the past year, WiseNut had almost no new content from any later than July 2001. By this past July, it was a year-old database. Now, it has launched a new database (even though it still claims the same 1.5 billion pages) which appears to be primarily from May 2002. So while it is still not very up-to-date, it is much fresher than it used to be....
LookSmart to Buy WiseNut
LookSmart announces its intent to buy the new search engine WiseNut. The press release notes that they will be integrating the WiseNut technology over the next few quarters, but what that means for LookSmart and WiseNut remains to be seen....
WiseNut announces that it will
WiseNut announces that it will power Lycos Japan. The WiseNut database being used includes 78 million Japanese pages. Lycos Japan will include WiseNuts WiseGuide folders as well as their "Sneak-a-Peek" feature which allows Internet Explorer users to see a portion of the results page within the regular search results list....
WiseNut Launches Out of Beta
WiseNut has officially launched with a new logo, redesigned site, and a new feature. The new feature is the [Sneak-a-Peek] after the result. In Internet Explorer, clicking [Sneak-a-Peek] will bring up an abbreviated, scrollable window just below the search result which contains the actual Web page. In Netscape, it just brings up the result in the same window like clicking the title. The new red color scheme makes the WiseGuide categories difficult to read....
